Slowing down for the holidays...

Part of the "Sacred Life Sunday" project is to take a picture of something in our everyday life and take a second to reflect on how little things are so big in our lives (if you have a blog, you're welcome to join). Today I chose our sofa, since its flowing lines gently bend the morning light, and as I begin each day, I love to turn soft music and sit down sipping a cup of coffee allowing the soft light rays to caress the fabric while I make a bad attempt at waking-up. I find it soothing.

This Sunday was all about light and this family room.

To start, our clocks played a silly trick on us and changed themselves to day-light savings time... a week early... thereby making us show up an entire hour late to our weekly Sunday morning coffee-date. Every sunday we meet with 25 friends at the local Starbucks, and completely invade it! By the time we got there, there were only 10 of us left. Then our parents and my four brothers & sisters met in this living room for a peaceful Sunday at home. No kids. No husbands. Just us.

It wasn't planned, it just happened. Since it was just us, we were able to let our guards down and have honest heart to heart conversations, laughs and tears, and we ended up making appointments to help each other as best we could. At the end of the day, we left with a tight hug and an honest smile. The best things happen on their own, unplanned. My soul needed that.

This sofa; this sofa was our witness.

Looking back on my past four holidays I realized that I've been out of the country, out of California, and away from my family, for the past 4 Halloweens and Thanksgivings! Next year I wont be here, I'll be in Italy. So, this week I will slow down a little for the holidays, and make time for them while I can still enjoy their daily presence in my life.

Several of you know that NaBloPoMo month is coming up! The challenge is to post in our blogs every... single... day...for...November! Uf, that will be something! and I want to end each post with a holiday recipe :) Any holiday tips and ideas are welcome.

Do you also want holiday recipes? Check-out the The Left Over Queen's wonderful Foodie Blog Roll :) There's so much in there for everyone! Ah, and if you're a blogger, too, you might also want to play with us and join in the tasty fun :) The more, the merrier!

Well, today I turn in the last part of a huge translation project that took me over a week to complete, and I want to take a couple days off to enjoy myself a little bit. So I decided to get into the holiday spirit by decorating our home :) I will turn on my favorite music, roll out my craft tools over the living room floor and make these Candy Filled Headstones for the children :)

...and decorate the house windows with these candles that project large shadows as I welcome the neighborhood trick-or-treaters :)

Nothing better than having your family around you, or knowing they are there for you even though you might live a few thousand KM away!

I didn't know you had stayed in Bergen for a few months, though I think I've read somewhere on your blog that you had a norwegian (Bergenser -) friend :) Where is he from in Bergen? I come from an island called Askøy, maybe you've been there?

Your previous posts about translation really inspired me and I gave it some serious thought to start out doing what you do. It will mean maybe a lot of work sometimes but also the freedom to travel like I do quite frequently. It would also mean that no matter where I'll be in the future I can still keep on doing that job.
In norway there's no formal courses for becoming a translater but there are certain exams you could take to get the necessary certificates. I'd love to hear how you ended up as a translater :)

Congratulations on finishing the huge translation project! I work partly as a translator (although presently I 've got a proper job as a civil servant) and I think it feels great when you finish something so big. I have translated a book of 750 pages and now I 'm on my second book about Homer.

I would also like to congratulate you on your blog. It's the first time I bump into it and I think it's fantastic. Good job!

A sofa full of meanings. It's wonderful. :)

I wonder if I could manage NaBloPoMo...you always have plenty of stories in one post, so I guess if you divide them in tinier sequences, you'll have no trouble making it!

Wonderful!
It was good to see you again!

The sofa in the family room keeps the most honest conversations, and it always welcome you at any time.
I most follow what you do, it sounds great!

Wow, I never imagined families like yours could even exist. It sounds amazing and you are truly lucky to have such a healthy, tight-knit family.
Enjoy it for all of us who never had it!!

This post is such a beautiful testament to your family, how close and caring you all sound.

:-)

For recipe ideas, maybe posting your version of capirotada? If you make this that is...

Happy Halloween!

Hola Delirante!
Hope you do join! I'd love to read your Sacred Life Sunday posts :)

Hi Astrid,
Oh, yes. Long story. I'll send you an email :) With your 4 languages, you have plenty to offer.

Welcome Claire!
Translating novels, especially 750 pages, is probably the most sought after project. How can you balance that and full time work? Well, congrats!

Ciao Erin!
Thanks... and hope you have a good Halloween even though you're far away from home :)

Hey Devlish,
Yup, I'll have to submit shorter posts. I think it'll be fun :) You're not joining?

Hi Nancy,
Good to see you again, too :) Hope work is well at the hospital. Nos vemos :)

Anonymous,
Thanks, I am happy to be part of this "clan" of ours. Though remember there's a challenge to anything, and with me it's the expectation of putting aside my life to constantly dive in to family stuff, and going through life with a loud play-by-play of every move I make! That's a given. But I love them, that's for sure :)

PixieDust!
Capirotada! Claro! Grandma has a great recipe, I'll have to get that and make it :)
